BOXXPORT is a digital container marketplace, aimed to challenge the traditional industry.

To comply with my confidentiality agreement, I have omitted appropriated confidential information.

I lead all UI and UX processes, marketing strategy planning, creative concept and content creation. I worked together with logistic teams, developers, managers and creatives;

Everything that you can see and experience on the platform and social media I have designed. I also did the branding and logo for BOXXPORT.

Problem statement

The container industry is still one of few industry that requires personal relationships and is offline.  There are lack of transparency of demand, stocks and prices. Only by direct contact or in person, you can get the information. This makes buying and selling a slow process and only thru small demographics.

Users and audience

Container traders, freight forwarders and shipping lines – who are looking to expand or get more insights in the industry. Also our team to manage the orders and stocks.

Our main target audiences are divided into 3 personas. We have designed the app based on these. As we continue our research and development, we also add more detail to our personas.

Scope and constraints

Thru very confidential environment, user research and testing are done is a very controlled manner. I manage to test with internal users. We tried our best with the tight deadlines and limited resources. 8 months and a small team from different careers and perspective in a start-up can be a challenging. As we are now live, I am currently preparing a detailed case study.

Process and contribution

We work in majority waterfall until near the launch date, we start to work in agile methodology with sprints and daily stands-ups. The daily meetings have made the team work better together. I give workshop and presentations to the team during the beginning and during of the product development and suggest any ways to improve our team to work together.

The early stages : Research methods and information architecture

With limited resources and confidentially to test externally, first I try to understand what are the needs of the user from talking to internal resources.

We created personas based on market research and based conversations I had with head of operations, sales and managing directors in the logistic business.

I gave presentations and workshops to the client to emphasis the importance of UX methods and research and how they can be a big player in the e-commerce market.

The importance of UX research

I gave presentations and workshops to the client to emphasis the importance of UX methods and research and how they can be a big player in the e-commerce market.

Experimentation and conception stage

I create low fidgety wireframe and site plans for the beginning of the project using paper, sketch and invision. I was able to move quickly and adjust anything based on the client feedback.

During the conception stage, we didn’t have so many big changes as we were working in waterfall process and aiming for the deadline.

Production Stage

As i move towards creating the UI, I create style guides and design patterns on Zeplin for the developers. From my background in animation, I also create small animations for interactions in the platform. We communicate with the developers thru calls and ticket system in Jira. We implement sprint cycles based on capacity and time lines.

Function and Design Testing

As each demo launch we did testing in-house. Mostly monkey testing and then later with specific criteria to test. I lead the design testing and other UX problems that arise during these times. Some flows were being changes but due to tight deadline and technical problem, we solve the problems with little or to no change of the UI design.

Outcomes and lessons

  • Teamwork and listening skills are one of the most important skills to create a successful app launch.
  • I have also learnt to talk and prove my point to the Management about UX research.
  • Designing the product for the customers (external users) and internal portal should be done in parallel and not after one another.

Come back here when the outcomes are updated! We are currently preparing the casestudy.
